Design of McLuhan’s book of quotes – “The Gutenberg Galaxy”

Student project @ Escuela Superior de Diseño de Madrid, 2016

EXERCISE SUBJECT

Designing a of “The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man” by Marshall McLuhan for the ESD Editorial. The design should be visually appealing, enhancing the book’s unusual structure. McLuhan himself describes it as a “mosaic image to be constructed from data and quotations”. “The Gutenberg Galaxy” is targeted at communications & design students and professionals; can be used for research, studying, also as a great source of quotes and valuable insights.

SOLUTION

I have opted for a minimalistic, purely typographic design in order to improve the general legibility of the book, known for its unusual (yet hard to read and digest) mosaic structure. Each quote/chapter has a clearly marked beginning, differentiating it from the previous passage.
